Despite the fact that research has shown that education can lower the overall cost of incarceration by reducing recidivism, a recent reported released by the Institute of Higher Education Policy showed that just a small percentage of U.S. prison inmates were enrolled in some form of postsecondary education in the 2009-10 academic year.

The Chronicle of Higher Education noted that less than one-fourth of the credentials awarded to inmates were associate or bachelor’s degrees–most inmates earned vocational certificates. A total of 9,900 inmates were awarded certificates in 2009-10, whereas 2,200 received associate degrees and just 400 received bachelor’s degrees.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the authors of the report used the data to encourage greater access to higher education for inmates (the survey was part of a larger research project aimed at finding ways to increase postsecondary access to underserved populations).

Kelly Young continues to add accolades to her trophy case, most recently being named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference female Athlete of the Week between April 25 and May 1 for her performance at the 2011 SCIAC Championships where she was named the Female Athlete of the Year after winning three events.

In the process, Young broke a 25 year old SCIAC Meet record. After earning her first gold in the hammer with a mark of 165’8″, she went on to set a new personal best and Occidental College record in the discus with a throw of 147’5″, nearly five feet further than she threw two weeks ago, to win by more than 27 feet.

On Saturday, Young added a third and ever-so-memorable win to her repertoire in the shot put. Not only did she earn an Automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, but her throw, more than nine feet further than her closest competition, 47’2½” was centimeters further than Cassandra Dumas (Redlands) threw the shot at the 1986 SCIAC Championship Meet.

— Now that Gov. Mitch Daniels has signed his overhaul of Indiana’s education system into law, the state’s Department of Education will start putting its pieces in place.

At a Statehouse ceremony Thursday, Daniels affixed his signature to measures that will launch a private school voucher program and open the door for an influx of new charter schools. It’s up to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett to implement those new programs.

First on his to-do list is the voucher program. Those who qualify could use scholarships to cover the cost of private school tuition as soon as the next school year, which begins in August.

“There are two pieces to this. There is the implementation piece, but there is also the communications piece on helping families understand how to access the system,” Bennett said.

Bennett said private schools interested in admitting students with vouchers will need to register with the Indiana Department of Education. Meanwhile,
