Double All-American ending; Young, Padron finish Top-8

A pair of Occidental College Tigers will return to Eagle Rock from the Division III Track & Field National Championships with the title of All-American. A senior veteran, Kelly Young, ended her career as a two-time 2011 All-American while an eager freshman, Jonathan Padron, sprinted his way to his first collegiate honor as an All-America.

A rainy and windy Thursday in Ohio forced the women’s hammer throw to be postponed to Friday, but that did not halt Young from moving up in the rankings to her first of two recognitions on the day. Climbing to the No. 8 spot with a throw of 172’10”, which came on her second attempt of the day.

Later in the afternoon, on her third shot put throw, she locked up an eighth place finish with a mark of 44’9¾” to conclude the accolades of her phenomenal collegiate career.

University School 2012 QB Holcombe to visit Purdue on Tuesday

PLANTATION Davie University School 2012 QB Gunnar Holcombe’s father confirmed he is going to West Lafayette, Ind., to Purdue’s one-day camp Tuesday June 21.

The Boilermakers are reportedly looking for two QBs in this class. They have also looked at Jupiter rising senior QB Tyler Cameron and Jupiter Christian 2012 QB Kedric Bostic.

Holcombe will also camp at Miami on Saturday June 25 and plans to attend a three-day camp at Florida State in July.

Former LAUSD superintendent Ramon Cortines reluctant to accept naming honor

Some parents of students at L.A. Unified’s new arts high school are upset that the school board’s moving forward with plans to name the campus after recently retired superintendent Ramon Cortines. The school board’s set to approve the naming Tuesday.

Former Superintendent Ramon Cortines was surprised by the board’s proposal. “I’m humbled, but also I’m honored. I’m not dead yet. Usually you name schools after people that are dead.”

The president of the Parent-Teacher-Student Association at L.A. High School Number 9 told the L.A. Times parents are upset the school board didn’t consult them.

Monday is the last night of summer vacation for thousands of Jefferson County Public School students.

Elementary schools start at 9:05am and end at 3:45pm
Middle and high schools start at 7:40am and end at 2:20pm

The JCPS transportation director is reminding parents that they could see some delays at the bus stops since it’s the first day.  Some children may get home later than expected, but the district has made changes that they hope will make the bus ride shorter for elementary students.

‘Drawn to Paint: The Art of Jerome Witkin’ to debut Sept. 8

Retrospective exhibition first to examine crucial aspect of artists career

Drawn to Paint: The Art of Jerome Witkin consists of 70 works including drawings, paintings and sketchbooks. Dividing the show between two venues, allowing for broader access and engagement within the community, Drawn to Paint will be on view Sept. 8-Oct. 23 at the SUArt Galleries on the Syracuse University main campus and the XL Projects gallery in downtown Syracuse. This exhibition, with Edward A. Aiken as its curator, is the first time Jerome Witkin has allowed his drawings to be displayed beside their finished works. Drawn to Paint will be traveling to other museums around the country during a two-year tour that will conclude at the Palmer Museum of Art in University Park, Pa.

The SUArt Galleries will host a free opening night reception from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8. Guests of honor will include the artist and curator of the exhibition.
