Water Polo ranked 10 in pre-season CWPA poll

Written by Jade Nowland on August 20, 2010.

August 22, 2010 Water Polo ranked 10 in pre-season CWPA poll The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced the Division III preseason rankings last week and the Occidental College Tigers landed at number 10 in the nation entering their 2010 campaign.

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is a very competitive conference as seen in the poll with Pomona-Pitzer, University of Redlands, Whittier College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps claiming the top four spots, respectively.

Having lost just two seniors to graduation, the Black and Orange return a solid core of athletes, being joined by eight freshman, and will look to climb the SCIAC ladder after a 9-17 finish in 2009. The Tigers placed sixth in the SCIAC with a 3-7 mark.

Rounding out the Top 10 in the pre-season poll were Johns Hopkins University (tying with CMS),  Chapman, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), California Lutheran University, University of La Verne and Oxy.

“The conference looks as competitive as ever,” head coach Larry Zubrin shared. “We may take some bumps early as our younger players get acclimated to collegiate water polo and we face formidable challenges in defending WWPA Champion Loyola Marymount, as well as Santa Clara and UC San Diego, but as the season progresses I believe this team will compete and work hard to earn a berth in the WWPA Conference Championship Tournament.”

The Tigers will open the season on Sept. 11 at the Inland Empire Tournament against SCIAC foe and host Redlands before taking on Division I UC Davis. On day two they will face off with Division I Pepperdine at the University of La Verne.

Occidental will also participate in the Cal Baptist, Claremont Convergence and Concordia-Irvine Tournaments this fall.

SCIAC play opens against No. 3 ranked Whittier at home on Sat. Oct. 16 at 11:00 a.m.
