Tigers take down Knights for first win of 2010 A second half surge pushed the Occidental College women’s basketball team past the visiting Knights from Carleton College, in their opening game of the season, for their first victory of the season with a 56-41 win at Rush Gymnasium.

After trailing by a pair at the intermission, 26-24, The Tigers saw Carleton score a quick three to openĀ  up the second stanza, leaving the Black and Orange trail by five, their largest deficit of the evening. Senior Stephanie Babij then sparked a 10-0 run in which she score two baskets with an assist as Oxy took a lead they would not relinquish throughout the remainder of regulation.

Not having hit a shot from long range the entire game, freshman Kendra Carter came off the bench to give Oxy a double figure lead, knocking down her first of two three-pointers in the game.

Makenzie Brandon gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game with two of the team’s 38 points in the paint with just over three minutes to play in regulation.

Two players, Laura Mohler and Katelyn Rowe, ended in double figures with 10 points apiece. Mohler and Babij handed out three assists apiece to lead the pack. Babij was a bucket shy of a double-double, with eight points.

The Tigers’ defense forced 25 turnovers, scoring 22 points off those Knights’ mishaps. Marquisha Corley was a defensive menace with five steals while Rowe added an incredible five blocks with a steal.

Occidental was out rebounded 45-37, but Babij led all players with 10. Rowe finished with seven and 12 different players had at least one.

Carleton’s Akemi Arzouman led all players with 15 points in their opening game of the year.

Occidental (1-2) travels to Caltech on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when they play Dominican University (IL) as a co-host of the Oxy-Caltech Thanksgiving Classic. On Sunday, Oxy will host Ohio Wesleyan University at 2:00 p.m. after Caltech and Dominican tip-off at noon.
