Written by Jade Nowland on November 29, 2010.

Tigers take down Fighting Eagles   For the second time in as many meetings the Occidental College men’s basketball team cruised by the American Sports University, winning 62-48 tonight at Rush Gymnasium.

A regularly scheduled game at ASU was relocated to the friendly confines of the Tiger den and the Black and Orange rode a 17-7 run into the locker room to lead 28-15 at the intermission.

The first year Tigers stepped up tonight and stole the show. Drew Dockweiler was a leader on both sides of the floor tonight as he pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end of the court. He also added eight points in 23 minutes of action. Ty Cobb also had a solid game with six points on 3-for-4 shooting and six rebounds with three on each end of the court.

Tonight’s leading scorer was Kris Montoya who poured in 23, hitting two of the three Oxy three-point attempts, but more impressively he was 7-for-7 at the free-throw line where the Tigers combined to shoot 82 percent (9-for-11). The freshman came away with eight rebounds, four offensive and four defensive, adding the only Oxy block of the night.

Dishing out a game-high five assists was Sam Stapleton. Also playing an important role tonight, in his return to the hardwood, was Eric Leider who was effective with seven points and four assists.

Oxy forced 23 turnovers and both Stapleton and Montoya came away with three steals apiece while Nick Robinson tallied two.

Occidental improves to 3-2 overall while ASU fell to 2-5. The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 7 when they host the Golden Eagles from West Coast Baptist University at 7:30 p.m.
