A pair of Occidental College Tigers will return to Eagle Rock from the Division III Track & Field National Championships with the title of All-American. A senior veteran, Kelly Young, ended her career as a two-time 2011 All-American while an eager freshman, Jonathan Padron, sprinted his way to his first collegiate honor as an All-America.
A rainy and windy Thursday in Ohio forced the women’s hammer throw to be postponed to Friday, but that did not halt Young from moving up in the rankings to her first of two recognitions on the day. Climbing to the No. 8 spot with a throw of 172’10”, which came on her second attempt of the day.
Later in the afternoon, on her third shot put throw, she locked up an eighth place finish with a mark of 44’9¾” to conclude the accolades of her phenomenal collegiate career.
On Friday afternoon, Padron ran a 10.64 in the 100 meter dash, to not only win his heat, but to enter finals on Saturday as the No. 1 seed in the country. Unpleasant conditions put all runners at a disadvantage in the finals with a strong headwind, but Padron powered through, running a 10.95, placing fourth, just five hundredths of a second off the winning time.
Eric Kleinsasser competed on both Thursday and Saturday in the 10K and 5K, respectively. While he remained in his seed spot, of 11th, in the 10K he climbed two spots to finish 16th in the 5K. The junior harrier ran a touch over 31 minutes in the opening race, crossing the line in 31:00.25 before completing the 5K in 15:22.34 to round out the weekend.
With the conclusion of the 2011 Division III Track & Field National Championships, so does end the 2010-11 athletic year for the Occidental College Tigers.
