Abilene alumnus awarded honorary degree

Ken D. Parr, who attended Abilene High School in 1947 and 1948, recently was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree by the University of Houston. His instruction at AHS included two years of machine shop instructed by George Kearwer.

Parr worked for Mrs Baird’s Bakery from 1948 to 1950, then moved to Fort Worth. As an inventor and entrepreneur, Parr worked on the U.S. space program and in other fields. He an his wife, Corine, now live in Richmond.

Rice University

Graduate

Ashley Herron, the 2007 Jim Ned High School valedictorian, recently graduated from Rice University. She is pursuing a doctorate.

LeTourneau University

Graduate

Ronald Duvall of Brownwood graduated from LeTourneau University with a master of business administration degree.

South Texas College of Law

Graduates

Two area residents recently graduated from South Texas College of Law in Houston.

Laura Noel Millican of Abilene received a doctorate of jurisprudence degree. She is a 2000 graduate of Cooper High School. Her parents are Larry and Joan Millican of Abilene.

Robbye Delle Bryan of Ballinger received a doctorate of jurisprudence degree. She is a 2003 graduate of Ballinger High School. Her parents are Debra Rinn and Robby Bryan of Ballinger.

Wayland Baptist University

Several area residents recently earned degrees from Wayland Baptist University.

Abilene: Neeca McKay Moody, bachelor of business administration degree in marketing and management

Breckenridge: Shelby Mynea Kennedy, master of arts in counseling degree in counseling

Merkel: Amanda Allen, bachelor of arts degree in theatre education

Rule: Thomas Kyle Simpson, associate of applied science degree in justice administration

Snyder: Amy L. Hall, master of education degree in elementary education; Linda Lee Key, bachelor of science in occupational education degree in management; Joe Paul Linebarger III, bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies degree in middle school mathematics.

Sweetwater: Maria C. Aguirre-Acuna, master of arts in management degree in human resource management

Throckmorton: Francis Cole Martinson, bachelor of science degree in exercise and sport science

Tuscola: Brandon Walter Mansfield, bachelor of business administration degree in accounting

Harding University

Dean’s list

Four Abilene residents were named to the Harding University dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester. They are Amanda Carroll, Braden Kehl, Leila Shelburne and Cole Taylor. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.65 and 12 credit hours during a semester to qualify for the list.

Sul Ross University

Dean’s list

Several area residents were named to the Sul Ross University dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester. Student’s must have a GPA of at least 3.3 to qualify for the list.

Southwestern University

Dean’s list

Two Abilene residents were named to the Southwestern University dean’s list for the spring 2011 semester. They are Susan Garrard and Mellisa Johnson. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.6 to qualify for the list.

Lone Star Ag Credit

Scholarship

Hadley Holland from Blackwell recently was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from Lone Star Ag Credit.
