Candidates are encouraged to file for two positions up for election on the Region 14 Education Service Center board.

The positions are for Area 4, made up of Eastland, Stephens and Comanche counties; and Area 6, one of two seats reserved for the Abilene Independent School District.

Candidates must file with Region 14 by Feb. 18. To qualify, a candidate must be at least 21 years old, not be on any other ESC boards or connected to any school board, and must live in the area served by the seat he or she is seeking.

The board has seven members. Each member serves a three-year term. At least two seats are up for election each year. Votes are cast by school board members of the 43 school districts in Region 14. The vote will be taken at March board meetings.

Responsibilities of the board include:

- Hire and periodically evaluate an executive director

- Develop policies for the ESC

- Approve all activities and programs

- Adopt a budget (following public hearings)

- Approve acquisition and disposal of property

- Approve grants

Anyone wishing to run for seats on the board should contact Region 14 ESC for the proper paperwork. Contact information: Region 14 Education Service Center, 1850 Highway 351, Abilene, 79601; 325-675-8600; fax 325-675-8659.
