Gregg’s new assignment was one of a number of personnel changes announced Friday by the Abilene Independent School District.
Karen Munoz, administrator of instruction at CHS and formerly principal of Ortiz Elementary, will succeed Gregg as principal.
Other moves announced Friday were:
Terry Bull will retire as principal at Abilene High in June 2012.
Joe Alcorta Jr. will replace the retiring Hubert Pickett as director of personnel next school year.
Linda Case will be the principal of the new Myra P. Martinez Elementary School when it opens in the 2012-13 school year.
Connie Mangin was named director of the new Jefferson Center.
Roy Sharp, now principal at Fannin Elementary, will become the new principal of Jackson Elementary.
Gregg will replace Virginia Mosier as executive director of career and technical education. Mosier, who has held the position since 2004, is retiring.
“Mr. Gregg will assume dual roles as principal and executive director of CATE,” said Superintendent Heath Burns. “This move will provide outstanding leadership for these special programs, at a cost savings to taxpayers by consolidating positions.”
Gregg has been principal at Cooper for eight years. He has 31 years of experience in education, including the past 19 with AISD.
He was principal for eight years at Franklin Middle School before moving to CHS and serves on the executive board for the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.
Munoz has been with AISD since beginning her education career in 1992. She became principal at Ortiz Elementary in 2003 before taking over as administrator of instruction at CHS in 2010.
“I am thrilled for Ms. Munoz. She is a one-time teacher of the year for AISD,” Burns said. “She has served in a lead instructional capacity for this year at CHS. She knows and respects the teachers very much and she offers a wonderful balance of accountability and compassion. I believe she will prove to be an outstanding leader for CHS for many years.”
Bull’s replacement at Abilene High will be chosen later.
When Bull retires in June 2012, he will have completed 37 years as a teacher and administrator in AISD. He took the principal job at AHS eight years ago after working as a teacher and coach at Madison Middle School, associate principal of Madison and principal of Clack Middle School.
Alcorta, who is replacing Pickett as director of personnel, has been principal at Mann Middle School for seven years.
“Dr. Alcorta has a passion for the human resources.,” Burns said. “His goal has been to assume responsibility in that office. Certainly, he has giant shoes to fill in replace Mr. Pickett, but I know Joe is up to the challenge.”
Case, who will be the principal of the new Martinez Elementary School, has been principal of Jackson Elementary School for 14 years.
Next year, Case will be principal for both Fannin and College Heights, the two elementary schools that are being combined to form the new school.
“Mrs. Case is one of our most experienced elementary school leaders,” Burns said. “Her experience and constancy will ease the inevitable flux that comes in combining campuses, communities and faculties. She will be an outstanding leader for Martinez Elementary.”
The new Jefferson Center, which Mangin will head, next year will house the combined student bodies of Sam Houston School and Travis Opportunity Center at the former site of Jefferson Middle School. Mangin is currently special education supervisor for the district.
Two campus principal positions remain unfilled. An immediate candidate search will begin for principals at Bonham for retiring Principal Diane Rose and Mann Middle School for Alcorta.
Mosier, a recipient of several statewide awards for her leadership in career and technology education, has headed the department since 2004. In 37 years in education, she has worked at the secondary, postsecondary and graduate levels, including stints as professor at Abilene Christian University and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Pickett had a varied a career with AISD, beginning in 1977 as a teacher at Fannin only four years after playing for Abilene Christian College’s 1973 national championship football team.
During his 35-year tenure in the district, he worked as a teacher and coach at Fannin and Lincoln Junior High, assistant principal of Franklin Middle School, principal of College Heights, principal of Jefferson Middle School and as the district’s director of personnel since 2004.
