Indiana Tech wants to build a 134-foot high wind turbine on its Fort Wayne campus by the end of the year.
School officials tell The Journal Gazette the wind turbine will provide educational opportunities for students in the energy engineering program and provide electricity for the Zollner Engineering Building.
The city Board of Zoning Appeals delayed a decision on the turbine last week because the application said the turbine would be 120 feet high and failed to take into account the 14-foot long blades. The school plans to resubmit its application.
Associate mechanical engineering professor John Renie says the 10-kilowatt turbine will cost about $110,000. The school plans to use part of a $300,000 grant from Steel Dynamics to pay for the project.
