First day back for SACS

Written by Gabrielle Batchelor on August 15, 2010.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Students in Southwest Allen County Schools headed back to class Monday morning. NewsChannel 15 caught up with some going into Homestead High School and Summit Middle School.

Like other districts, SACS has faced budget cuts and anticipates more in the upcoming year. Last year district officials cut over $1 million from the budget without cutting in the classroom. Superintendent Dr. Steve Yager said the district has a similar plan this year to avoid hurtful cuts.

“That plan does talk about some salary reductions, and benefit reductions, some furlough days for some folks,” said Dr. Steve Yager, SACS Superintendent.

Voters in the Southwest Allen County district passed a $3.5 tax referendum in 2009. SACS will start seeing the money from that referendum this year.

Yager also told NewsChannel 15 the growth of the General Motors plant in Fort Wayne is having an impact on SACS.

“We’ve experienced some growth with the GM plant we don’t know exactly what that number would be as of yet, but we do know that we’ve had some growth particularly at the middle school and secondary level,” said Yager.

Yager said SACS has managed to cut over $3.5 million during the last ten years.
