Houston Mayor Annise Parker and officials from the University of Houston unveiled a new partnership on Tuesday that allows for the purchase of emergency solar power generators.
With funding from the State Energy Conversation Office, the city is buying special solar power generators that were developed by UH and Amaresco Solar Solutions.
According to the city, the power generators are a “first-of-their-kind.”
The generators are self-contained and portable, making them easy to set up and use in the event of an emergency.
In non-emergency times, they can be used to power small spaces during special events away from a regular power supply.
At a ceremony near City Hall on Tuesday, Mayor Parker said the city would be purchasing 17 of the solar power units.
The units, built from recycled shipping containers, will be kept on standby in the event of a hurricane or other severe weather.
