Homecoming isn’t just a football game or small get-together between old classmates.

Activities began Friday, but most of Abilene Christian University’s homecoming occurred Saturday when a parade, football game, chapel, musical and more brought thousands back to town.

Ann Reese returned from Thailand, where she and her husband work as missionaries, to take part in the Coming Home Court, a group of previous homecoming court nominees.

Reese, who returns for yearly visits, made the most of this weekend.

“We wanted to be able to see our friends and also our family,” said Reese, who has 2- and 4-year-old daughters.

The day began with a breakfast with her school social club at 6:30 a.m. From there was the parade, where she rode in a yellow convertible. The parade featured floats decorated by the university’s social clubs, as well as homecoming queens on convertibles, athletic teams walking the short course and the marching band.

After that was homecoming chapel, the football game and the alumni dinner.

The only thing missing from the itinerary was the “Titanic.”

Dennis Whiteside came to see his sophomore daughter for homecoming, but he said he enjoys the rest of the things involved with the weekend.

“I enjoy the crowd and festivities,” said Whiteside, who also took in “Titanic.” “I was here for the play last year, and it was very good.”

For Debbie Holman, a 1981 ACU graduate, this homecoming is one of many.

She and her husband Kurt have two daughters — a junior and freshman — at ACU and come from Austin to attend many of the university’s big weekends.

“We came in for Freshman Follies, Homecoming, Sing Song,” Kurt Holman said.

Debbie Holman had returned for homecoming just a few times since graduating but will be back again.

“Next year is my 30th reunion, so I’ll come back,” she said.
