Just what is it that makes a town special? In the classic motion picture “Field of Dreams,” Dr. Archibald “Moonlight” Graham explained it this way: “This is my most special place in all the world … Once a place touches you like this, the wind never blows so cold again. You feel for it, like it was your child.”
High school students from throughout the region will again have a chance tospotlight their city during the second annual My Home Town Video Contest.Sponsored by the University of La Verne Communications Department, LVTV-3, and KWST, the contest gives both public and private high school students from 28 local communities the opportunity to submit a video of five minutes or less showcasing what makes their town a cut above the rest.
The competition received a good response in its inaugural year, receiving two dozen entries from 14 communities according to Don Pollock, contest director and professor of communications at La Verne. In addition, around 50 people attended the screening of the best of those entries, giving the communications department a chance to spread the word about its annual Communications Day and the university’s available performance scholarships.
This year, the contest has expanded, doubling the number of eligible cities.
“Rather than giving cash prizes as we did last year, we are soliciting donations of equipment from vendors we do business with as prizes,” said Pollock. “This freed up money for printing and postage to expand the contest to more communities.”
Pollock’s goal is to eventually include cities from Pasadena to Rialto.
Prizes of video equipment and software, perfect for the up-and-coming film maker, will be awarded for the top three video entries. The best entries will be included on aDVD that will be broadcast on public access television throughout the country.
In addition, the top videos will be shown in a screening held in room 212 of La Verne’s Arts & Communications Building on October 23 at 7 p.m.
Applications are available online at http://laverne.edu/lvtv/myhometown.html and must be received by September 30.
