Men’s Soccer Leads the 13 Sports Honored
SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo University Department of Athletics saw 32 student-athletes honored as they were named to the Division II Athletic Directors Academic Achievement Award list presented by WeatherPORT. The Academic Achievement Award is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level.
To be eligible for the award the student-athlete must meet three requirements set forth by the Division II Athletic Directors Association and the institution’s athletic director must be an active member. The requirements state that the student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work and that they have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year.
Of the 32 Lions on the list, men’s soccer earned the honor of having the most student-athletes recognized with six while women’s swimming saw four players make the list. Four other programs placed four on the list. 13 Saint Leo programs placed at least one student-athlete on the list for the 2009-10 season.
Saint Leo was one of five of the Sunshine State Conference’s nine member institutions to be recognized. The Lions’ honorees were joined by representatives from Eckerd, Lynn, Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern.
92 institutions sent in nominees for the 2009-10 Academic Achievement Awards, while a total of 3,022 student-athletes are being recognized this year.
The Division II Athletic Directors Association is the first organization of its kind to provide educational and networking opportunities; enhancement of acceptable operating standards and ethics; and establishment of the overall prestige and understanding of the profession of Division II athletics directors.
